The Summer of Stone
"Granite grey" is the hot color for this summer's line of a NY designer who got his start selling shoes out of the back of a borrowed truck? Can you guess his name?
The Tombstone Cocktail
2oz. Bourbon
1 tsp. Rich simple syrup*
3 dashes Angostura Bitters
Shake ingredients with ice, strain into cocktail & garnish with a lemon twist.
*The Rich simple syrup is the "secret ingredient" to this cocktail. Melt 2 parts Sugar In The Raw with water. (Recipe by David Wondrich)
Design Innovation
In the early 1980's Kenneth Cole was an emerging designer. He had returned to NYC from Europe with a line of shoes but no money to acquire a retail space in which to sell them. So with a borrowed truck and a permit from the City Of New York to shoot a movie on the streets of Manhattan (The fictitious film was to be titled "Birth of a Shoe Company") he parked his truck in a prime mid-town location and sold 40,000 pairs of shoes out of the back of the truck in two days. Or so the story goes.
Summer Whites
If you love the crisp, cool look of white Carrara marble for countertops but you fear the etching and staining that can happen with marble then consider Vermont White Granite. It is Brazilian granite that has the gray-white look of Carrara marble. You can see slabs of Vermont White Granite at the Refined Stone showroom.
Stay Hydrated!
Kidney Stones are more common during the summer months according to Dr. Robert Salant in a recent blog post. Kidney stones can be a result of a lack of hydration. People are more physically active in the summer months they sweat more and so the probability of the stones forming increases.
Stone Summer Theory
The Stone Summer Theory Institute is a week-long school in contemporary art theory. This year's event is focused on fundamental questions: What are images? What are pictures? The event is a week of public lectures, panel discussions, and films, with a group of twenty international experts.
