Soapstone Kitchen Countertops, Cheshire CT

Soapstone is quarried the same way as granite and marble.  It has a high concentration of talc which gives the surface a soft feeling like touching a piece of dry soap and so the name Soap Stone. Soapstone is one of the original all purpose materials used in early kitchens specifically kitchen sinks and work surfaces.  Although soapstone is soft enough to carve it is a remarkably durable stone and is virtually non-porous which makes it an excellent material for use as a kitchen countertop.

Soapstone comes in colors of gray, green and black.  The owner of this Cheshire kitchen chose a black soapstone with a particularly striking white vein throughout the stone which has the appearance of a bolt of lightening streaking across the night sky.  The stone is the "black" in this black & white contemporary kitchen design.  Please note in some of the images the mirrored backsplash inspired by the personal kitchen of the legendary American chef and food writer James Beard.
